Characters like Leon S. Kennedy and Chris Redfield are now icons in gaming.

There are many different ways to play these games. Some use a third-person view where you see the character. Others use a first-person view where you see through the character's eyes. Resident Evil 4 in 2005 helped make the "over-the-shoulder" view very popular. Later, Resident Evil 7 used a first-person view to make things feel more scary. Some games even let people play together in a team. The series also includes remakes that update older games with new looks. These remakes, like the one for Resident Evil 2, have been huge successes.

The story began in 1993 when developers started working on the first game.

Tokuro Fujiwara asked Shinji Mikami to create something special. They used ideas from an older game called Sweet Home. In Japan, the first game was called Biohazard. When it came to the United States, the name had to change. This was because other things already used the name Biohazard. A contest was held to find a new name for the West. They chose Resident Evil, and the first game arrived on PlayStation in 1996.

The stories often follow the Umbrella Corporation. This is a huge company that secretly makes viruses. These viruses can turn humans into zombies or change animals into monsters. Much of the action happens in a place called Raccoon City. This city is located in the Arklay Mountains in the United States. A virus outbreak in the city led to a very sad event. The U.S. government used a nuclear missile to destroy the city. This was done to stop the virus from spreading further. Characters like Jill Valentine and Claire Redfield have had to escape this chaos.

Resident Evil is much more than just video games.

It has grown into a massive media franchise. There are live-action films, animated movies, and even television shows. You can also find comic books, novels, and audiobooks about these worlds. The films have earned over $1.2 billion at the box office. This makes it the third-highest-grossing video game film series in history. Whether through a screen or a book, people enjoy these spooky adventures. The series continues to grow with new games like Resident Evil Requiem.
