Research is a systematic and creative process used to increase the stock of human knowledge. It involves the intentional collection, organization, and analysis of evidence to better understand a specific topic. A key part of this work is being attentive to controlling sources of bias and error. Bias occurs when personal opinions or prejudices influence the results. By managing these factors, researchers ensure their findings are as accurate as possible.

This work can expand upon past studies or test the validity of existing instruments and experiments. Through replication, researchers can check if previous results remain true under new conditions.

There are two primary categories of research: basic and applied. Basic research focuses on documentation, discovery, and interpretation. Its main goal is the advancement of human knowledge through the development of new methods and systems. In contrast, applied research seeks to use knowledge for practical purposes. Both types are essential for moving our understanding of the world forward. Researchers often follow specific epistemologies, which are different ways of understanding how we acquire knowledge. These approaches vary significantly between the sciences and the humanities.

Scientific research is a structured way of gathering data to explain the nature of the world. It often follows a specific cycle of steps to ensure accuracy. First, a researcher makes observations and forms a topic of interest. They must justify this topic by linking it to existing literature to find a "gap" in current knowledge. Next, they develop a hypothesis, which is a testable prediction about the relationship between variables. Researchers must also create operational definitions to explain exactly how these variables will be measured.

After defining the variables, the researcher begins gathering data. This involves selecting a population and using valid, reliable instruments to collect information. Once the data is collected, the researcher performs an analysis to break down the individual pieces of information. This leads to data interpretation, often using tables, figures, or pictures to describe the findings. Finally, the researcher tests or revises the hypothesis. It is a common misconception that a hypothesis is "proven." Instead, an experiment can only support a hypothesis or cause it to be rejected if the results are inconsistent.

Research is not limited to the hard sciences; it also includes the humanities and the arts. Humanities research, such as historical research, uses methods like hermeneutics and semiotics. Historians use primary sources to investigate the past and write systematic accounts. They often focus on context, including social, political, and cultural factors. Some studies in the humanities are qualitative or quantitative, exploring behaviors in societies through theories like feminist or queer theory.

Artistic research, or practice-based research, offers an alternative to purely scientific methods. In this field, the creative work itself can be both the research and the object of study. Unlike classical science, artistic research often accepts subjectivity and utilizes intuition to find new ways of working. It aims to gain knowledge within artistic disciplines by using methods like documentation and criticality. Even writers use research to support their work, whether through historical facts or geographical background.

The history of seeking knowledge is deeply rooted in human thought. The word "research" comes from the Middle French "recherche," meaning "to go about seeking." The earliest recorded use of the term dates back to 1577. Long before this, the Ancient Greek philosopher Aristotle, who lived from 384 to 322 BC, was a pioneer in developing the scientific method. Today, research is a massive global undertaking. It can be conducted in specialized laboratories, on maritime research vessels, or in public libraries.

Research is a diverse field that connects many different parts of society. It can be categorized into many forms, including economic, social, business, and technological research. There is even a field called meta-research, which is the scientific study of research practices themselves. Whether it is a graduate student performing original research for a dissertation or a scientist using advanced equipment, the goal remains the same. Through constant inquiry and the testing of new ideas, research ensures that human understanding continues to grow.
