Plato wrote a famous book called the *Republic* around 375 BC.

It is a Socratic dialogue, which means it is a written conversation. In this book, a thinker named Socrates talks with several people in Athens. They explore the meaning of justice and how to live fairly. Socrates also wonders if a just person is truly happier than an unjust one. This work is one of the most influential books in history. It has shaped how people think about politics and ideas for many years.

The book starts with Socrates visiting the port of Piraeus.

There, he meets people like Cephalus and Polemarchus. They argue about what justice really means in daily life. For example, Cephalus thinks justice is being honest and returning what you owe. Socrates disagrees by using the example of a borrowed knife. He argues it might be wrong to return a knife to a person who has gone mad. Later, a man named Thrasymachus claims that justice only helps the strong. Socrates uses many different arguments to show why this might not be true.

To find a better answer, Socrates suggests looking at a whole city.

He imagines a perfect, or utopian, city called Kallipolis. This city would be ruled by a special class called philosopher-kings. These leaders would be very wise and would not own private wealth. They would focus only on what is good for the whole city. To keep order, Socrates suggests a "noble lie" to help citizens accept their roles. This story tells people they are made of different metals like gold, silver, or bronze.

Socrates says a just city must have four main virtues.

These are wisdom, courage, justice, and temperance. Wisdom is found in the rulers who make good decisions. Courage is found in the warriors who protect the city. Temperance is when everyone agrees on who should lead. Finally, justice happens when every person does their own job well. In this way, no one interferes with the work of others. This balance keeps the entire city happy and stable.

Socrates then connects the city to the human soul.

He believes the soul has three different parts. One part is rational, which means it thinks and learns. The second part is spirited, which handles feelings like bravery. The third part is appetitive, which deals with basic desires. A person is just when these three parts work in harmony. The rational part should lead the other two parts. When the soul is in balance, a person can live a truly good life.
