The Republic of China (ROC) was a government established on 1 January 1912. It emerged following the Xinhai Revolution, which successfully overthrew the Manchu-led Qing dynasty. This revolution was a massive turning point in history. It ended over two thousand years of imperial rule in China. The new republic aimed to transform China into a modern nation.

The founding of the republic involved complex political negotiations. Sun Yat-sen was a key revolutionary leader. He was elected as the provisional president in late 1911. However, Sun lacked the military power to secure the new government. He negotiated a deal with Yuan Shikai, the commander of the Beiyang Army. Yuan agreed to help remove the Qing emperor. On 12 February 1912, the final emperor, Puyi, abdicated his throne.

After the initial transition, the government faced significant instability. Yuan Shikai became the first formal president in 1913. He ruled with heavy military force and ignored republican institutions. In 1915, Yuan attempted to restore the monarchy by declaring himself emperor. This move caused widespread popular unrest and anger. When Yuan died in 1916, the central government lost much of its control. This led to the Warlord Era, a period of decentralized conflict.

During the Warlord Era, various military cliques fought for power. Meanwhile, Sun Yat-sen worked to rebuild the Kuomintang (KMT) party. He sought to reunify China through the Northern Expedition. In 1926, the KMT launched this military campaign. They initially formed a First United Front with the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). This alliance aimed to defeat the regional warlords. By 1928, the KMT had successfully reunified much of the country.

Following reunification, the KMT established a Nationalist government in Nanjing. General Chiang Kai-shek rose to power after Sun Yat-sen's death in 1925. Chiang eventually ended the alliance with the CCP and purged Communist members. From 1927 to 1937, this period was known as the Nanjing decade. It saw a period of relative prosperity and central control. However, the government faced constant internal and external threats. These included uprisings from warlords and the growing strength of the CCP.

External conflict significantly impacted the Republic of China. In 1931, Japan invaded Manchuria. This was followed by a full-scale Japanese invasion in 1937. World War II caused immense destruction and loss of life across China. The war ended in September 1945 when Japan surrendered. Following the war, Taiwan was placed under Chinese administration. However, a new civil war soon broke out between the KMT and the CCP.

The Chinese Civil War reached a decisive stage by 1948. The People's Liberation Army of the CCP gained the upper hand. They used effective tactics against a leadership facing internal corruption. In 1949, the CCP established the People's Republic of China (PRC) in Beijing. The KMT lost control of the mainland and retreated to Taiwan. The ROC continues to govern the Taiwan Area to this day.

At its peak in 1949, the ROC was a massive entity. It had a population of 541 million people. This made it the most populous country in the world at that time. The ROC was also a founding member of the League of Nations and the United Nations. The term "Republic of China" was chosen to represent a people's state. Sun Yat-sen wanted a model that allowed for more grassroots participation. This history remains a central part of modern East Asian politics.
