Repowering

technology Maturity 9-11 Next article →

We can upgrade old power stations. This is called repowering. It means replacing old parts with new ones. New parts can make more power. They can also work better. This helps save money too.

Some plants use wind power. We can replace small wind turbines with big ones. New turbines are often larger. They are more efficient, which means they use wind well. In the United States, people finished many wind projects in 2017. In places like Germany, they use repowering to get more wind power. Using old roads and wires helps keep costs low.

Some plants burn coal. New rules help the air stay clean. We can change these plants to burn gas instead. One way is to use a gas-fired turbine. This is a machine that uses gas to make power. We can also add a heat recovery steam generator. This part catches heat to make more steam. This makes the whole plant work much better. It can even help the plant use less fuel.

One big plant in Seward was updated. It used to burn waste coal. Now it uses new boilers. It is the largest waste coal plant in the world. It uses 11,000 tons of waste coal every day.
