life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A repetitive strain injury is called an RSI. It happens when you use your body parts many times. It can also happen if you stay in one spot. You might feel aching or pulsing pain. Your hands or arms might feel weak or tingle.

Many jobs can cause an RSI. Miners and poultry workers must make repeated motions. Using a computer or typewriter can also cause it. This is because people stay in one position for a long time. Some people call these hurts "Blackberry thumb" or "PlayStation thumb."

Certain things can make an RSI more likely. Being older can increase your risk. Women are also more likely to have them. This is because they often have smaller frames and less muscle.

Doctors use tests to find an RSI. They might check how strong your grip is. They may use an X-ray to look at your wrist. There is no quick fix for an RSI. It is very important to find it early. You can use RICE to help. This stands for rest, ice, compression, and elevation. Using ergonomics can also help. Ergonomics is the science of designing tools to fit your body.
