These tools helped people communicate, travel, and build much larger things. Some inventions were brand new, while others were better versions of old ideas. One of the biggest changes was how people shared information. Johannes Gutenberg, a German goldsmith, created the movable type printing press. This machine used a screw press to print pages very quickly. It could make about 3,600 impressions in a single workday. Because of this, books became much easier to make in large numbers. By the 16th century, presses worked in over 200 different cities. This helped more people learn to read and share new ideas.

New technology also helped with big jobs like building and sailing. Explorers like Vasco da Gama used an astrolabe to find their way at sea. In England, Henry VII ordered a dry dock to be built at Portsmouth. Some people even used huge lifting towers to move massive stones. Domenico Fontana used one to move a 361-ton obelisk in Rome. Even floating docks were used to help save ships that ran aground. These tools made the world feel much smaller and more connected.

A central mechanism that drove many machines was the crank and connecting rod. A crank converts circular motion into reciprocal motion, which is a back-and-forth movement. This mechanism is vital for mechanizing work processes. During the Renaissance, engineers greatly diversified and refined its use. They applied connecting rods to double compound cranks and used flywheels to help these cranks move past "dead-spots." Early evidence of these machines appears in the works of 15th-century engineers like Taccola and the Anonymous of the Hussite Wars.

Mechanical improvements also transformed industry, particularly in metallurgy and mining. The blast furnace allowed iron to be produced in much larger quantities. This pig iron was then processed in a finery forge to create bar iron, also known as wrought iron. Other specialized machines included the slitting mill, which mechanized the production of iron rods for making nails. In lead production, the smeltmill increased output compared to older methods. These advancements in metalworking provided the raw materials needed for more complex engineering projects.

The invention of the mechanical movable type printing press by Johannes Gutenberg changed the world. Gutenberg was a German goldsmith who lived from 1398 to 1468. His device used a modified screw press to produce books on a proto-industrial scale. A single press could make around 3,600 impressions in one workday. This invention is often cited as the most important event of the second millennium. By the start of the 16th century, printing presses operated in over 200 cities across a dozen European countries. These presses had produced more than twenty million volumes by that time.

As printing grew, it led to the birth of the newspaper. In 1605, Johann Carolus of Strassburg published the *Relation*, the first German-language newspaper. This used a printing press to provide faster information than hand-written news sheets. By the mid-17th century, political newspapers in the Holy Roman Empire reached up to 250,000 readers. This represented about one-quarter of the literate population. The ability to circulate ideas helped increase literacy and education. It also allowed the ideas of the Protestant Reformation to spread rapidly through different social classes.

Engineers also explored the limits of human flight and heavy lifting. The earliest known parachute design appeared in an anonymous Italian manuscript from the 1470s. It featured a conical canopy and a crossbar frame. Around 1485, Leonardo da Vinci sketched a more advanced version in his *Codex Atlanticus*. He used a square wooden frame to create a pyramidal shape. Later, the Venetian inventor Fausto Veranzio modified this by using a bulging, sail-like cloth to decelerate the fall more effectively.

Large-scale engineering projects required massive power and specialized facilities. In 1495, Henry VII of England ordered the construction of a dry dock at Portsmouth. Inventors also developed floating docks to salvage grounded ships. One 1560 Venetian description shows a ship flanked by two large floating trestles. For moving massive objects, Domenico Fontana used a lifting tower to relocate the Vatican obelisk in Rome. This monolithic stone weighed 361 tons. This weight was much greater than the 53.3-ton blocks at Trajan's Column or the 60 to 100-ton blocks at the Temple of Baalbek.
