Descartes's life included many different roles and locations. He was born in La Haye en Touraine, France, on March 31, 1596. He studied at the Jesuit College of La Flèche. After graduating in 1614, he studied law at the University of Poitiers. His father wanted him to become a lawyer. However, Descartes also had ambitions in the military. In 1618, he joined the Protestant Dutch States Army as a mercenary. While in Breda, he studied military engineering. This experience encouraged his continued study of mathematics.

In November 1619, Descartes experienced a turning point in his life. While staying in Neuburg an der Donau, he stayed in a warm room to escape the cold.

During this time, he had three dreams. He believed a divine spirit revealed a new philosophy to him. These visions led him to conclude that science was his life's work. He realized he could apply mathematical methods to the study of philosophy. This period helped shape his pursuit of true wisdom.

He also published "Meditations on First Philosophy" in 1641. These books were written to address deep questions about existence. His life in the Netherlands was also marked by personal loss. He had a daughter named Francine, who died of scarlet fever at age five. This experience may have shifted his focus toward seeking universal answers.

In 1649, Queen Christina of Sweden invited Descartes to her court.
