How does infrared work? A remote has a small part called an LED. This part sends out pulses of light. When you press a button, the light pulses in a special pattern. The device has a receiver to see the pattern. Each button has its own unique pattern. The device reads the pattern and follows your command. You can even see these light pulses with a phone camera!

The most common technology in home remotes is infrared (IR) light. Infrared is a type of radiation that is invisible to the human eye.

When you press a button on a remote, a transmitter sends out pulses of this light. This transmitter is often a light-emitting diode, or LED, located at the front of the handset.

These pulses form a unique digital pattern for every specific button. The receiving device has a sensor that recognizes these patterns. Once the pattern is identified, the device performs the requested action, such as changing a channel or adjusting volume.

Remote control technology has a long and diverse history. In the late 19th century, developers created these systems to control unmanned military torpedoes. German engineer Werner von Siemens created a wired version in 1870. By 1897, British engineers Ernest Wilson and C. J. Evans developed radio-controlled versions.

In 1898, Nikola Tesla demonstrated a prototype in New York. In 1903, Spanish engineer Leonardo Torres Quevedo introduced the "Telekino" in Paris. This was a radio-based system designed to control an airship. He tested it using a three-wheeled land vehicle with a range of 20 to 30 meters. He also guided an electrically powered boat with a standoff range of 2 kilometers.

Television remotes underwent many technological shifts during the 20th century. In 1939, the Philco Mystery Control became the first wireless consumer remote. It was a battery-operated low-frequency radio transmitter.

This device was also the first to use pulse-count modulation for digital wireless control. In 1950, Zenith Radio Corporation released the "Lazy Bones," which was a wired remote.

In 1980, the Starcom Cable TV Converter used 40-kHz sound to change channels. Soon after, the Canadian company Viewstar began producing infrared remotes for cable converters. This was a major success, with 1.6 million units sold by 1989.

Modern remotes have expanded into many different categories and functions. In the 1980s, Steve Wozniak of Apple started a company called CL 9. They created the CORE unit, which was a computer-linked learning remote.

This device could "learn" signals from different electronics to control multiple machines. In the 1990s, car manufacturers began using remotes for electronic door locks and trunks. Some people even use remote starters to warm up their cars in winter climates. Today, many smartphones include infrared emitters to act as universal remotes via apps.

The proliferation of electronics has changed how we use these devices. The Consumer Electronics Association notes that an average US home now has four remotes. A complex home theater might require as many as five or six different remotes.

This can be cumbersome because there are no universal interface guidelines. To solve this, many people use universal remotes that emulate major brands. Others use smart TV features, like standalone keyboards or pointing devices, to navigate menus. Remote technology continues to evolve, moving from simple wires to Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and voice control.
