Early remotes used different ways to work. Some used wires to connect to the device. In 1956, one remote used ultrasound. Ultrasound is a sound that is too high for humans to hear. These were often called "clickers." Later, remotes used infrared light. 
How does infrared work? A remote has a small part called an LED. This part sends out pulses of light. When you press a button, the light pulses in a special pattern. The device has a receiver to see the pattern. Each button has its own unique pattern. The device reads the pattern and follows your command. You can even see these light pulses with a phone camera! 
A remote control is a handy electronic device. It lets you operate other machines from a distance. Most remotes work wirelessly to make things easy.

Television remotes underwent many technological shifts during the 20th century. In 1939, the Philco Mystery Control became the first wireless consumer remote. It was a battery-operated low-frequency radio transmitter. 


As technology advanced, remotes became more complex to handle new services. In 1973, the BBC introduced the Ceefax teletext service. This service required users to enter three-digit page numbers. Standard remotes with only three buttons could not handle this need. This led to the development of more advanced prototypes around 1977 and 1978. In 1980, the Starcom Cable TV Converter used 40-kHz sound to change channels. Soon after, the Canadian company Viewstar began producing infrared remotes for cable converters. This was a major success, with 1.6 million units sold by 1989.
Modern remotes have expanded into many different categories and functions. In the 1980s, Steve Wozniak of Apple started a company called CL 9. They created the CORE unit, which was a computer-linked learning remote. 
The proliferation of electronics has changed how we use these devices. The Consumer Electronics Association notes that an average US home now has four remotes. A complex home theater might require as many as five or six different remotes.
