Reggio Calabria is a major city located in southern Italy. It serves as the largest city in the Calabria region. It is also the seat of the Metropolitan City of Reggio Calabria. It sits near the center of the Mediterranean Sea.

The city occupies a unique geographic position on the "toe" of the Italian Peninsula. It sits on the slopes of the Aspromonte mountain range. This range is long and craggy. Reggio Calabria is separated from the island of Sicily by the Strait of Messina. This strait is a major feature of the local landscape. The city maintains strong historical and economic ties with Messina. Together, they form a metro city of less than 1 million people.

Geology plays a massive role in the life of the city. Reggio Calabria sits on the Eurasian Plate. It is located near a faultline where it meets the African Plate. This faultline runs through the Strait of Messina. This meeting of tectonic plates divides Calabria and Sicily into two different tectonic regions. Because of this, the area experiences frequent seismicity, or earthquake activity. A catastrophic earthquake in 1908 destroyed most of the city.

This event led to the creation of a modern urban system during the reconstruction.

The history of the city spans over 3,500 years. It has been known by many different names throughout the ages. In ancient times, it was a flourishing colony of Magna Graecia. The Greeks settled the site around 730 or 743 BC. They called it Rhegion. During the 4th century BC, it was briefly called Phoebeia. The city saw rule from many groups, including the Romans, Arabs, and Normans.

Cultural heritage is a defining feature of Reggio Calabria. The city is home to the National Archaeological Museum of Magna Græcia. This museum is one of the most important in the country. It is dedicated to Ancient Greece. The museum houses the Bronzes of Riace. These are rare examples of Greek bronze sculpture. They have become symbols of the city itself. Because of these statues, many people call the city the "City of Bronzes."

The city's environment and economy are also very distinct. Reggio is known as the "City of Bergamot." This is because bergamot is exclusively cultivated in the region. The city is also nicknamed the "City of Fatamorgana." This refers to a specific optical phenomenon visible from the seaside. The city center features a linear development along the coast. It contains many Liberty-style buildings. The promenade is decorated with exotic palms and rare magnolias.

Reggio Calabria connects the ancient past with a modern Mediterranean life. It remains a major functional pole for the southern shores of the Mediterranean. The city's history of migration has created a diverse culture. For example, Byzantine rule left Greek words in local speech and liturgy. Arabic rule introduced citrus fruits and new ways of cooking vegetables. Today, the city continues to be a center for culture, sport, and economy.
