A reflex is a quick move your body makes on its own.

You do not have to think about it. A stimulus, or a change in your world, starts the reflex. This signal travels through a reflex arc. A reflex arc is a path in your nervous system.

The signal does not always go to your brain. This makes the response very fast. Many reflexes help you stay safe. For example, the startle reflex helps you react to a surprise. A cat has a reflex to help it land on its feet.

Babies have many special reflexes. These are called primitive reflexes. They help babies react to things before they learn. One is the palmar grasp reflex. This is when a baby grips things. Doctors use reflexes to check your health. They look at how strong your moves are. They use a scale from 0 to 4 to grade them. A score of 2 is normal for most people.
