A referee is a very important official in many different sports. Their main job is to enforce the rules of the game. They make sure every player follows the same instructions. This helps keep the competition fair and honest for everyone.

Depending on the sport, people might call them umpires, judges, or arbiters. Some people even call them technical officials. They might work alone or with a whole team of helpers. These helpers can be linesmen, timekeepers, or even video assistants.

In many sports, the referee has the final say on what happens. In association football, the referee has full authority to enforce the laws. They often work with two assistant referees and sometimes a fourth official. In American football, the referee supervises the whole game. They are assisted by up to six other officials on the field. These helpers have special names like the head linesman or the back judge.

Rules for referees have changed a lot over many years. In early football matches, team captains used to talk to each other to solve problems. In 1881, a third neutral official called a referee was added to help. By 1891, the referee began standing on the pitch during the game. In rugby, the International Rugby Board was created in 1892. This happened because captains could not agree on a disputed try. To make things easier, the rules were changed to require one referee and two touch judges.

Referees often wear special clothes so players can see them easily. In American football, they traditionally wear black-and-white striped shirts. Dr. Lloyd W. Olds created this design in 1921. The stripes provide contrast so they stand out from the team uniforms. In Gaelic football and hurling, there are usually seven officials. This includes a main referee and two linesmen. In hurling, you might also see umpires wearing white coats.

Keeping people safe is one of the most important parts of being an official. In boxing, the referee gives instructions to the fighters. They start and stop the count when a person goes down. They must stop the fight if a competitor cannot continue without getting hurt. In mixed martial arts, the referee's main job is the safety of the fighters. They stop fights if a fighter cannot defend themselves.
