Nature made things even harder. The Yellow River flooded the land often. Many people also died from bad sicknesses. These hard times led to the Red Turban Rebellions. The Red Turbans were groups that rose up against the Yuan rulers. They often met at night to worship. Some leaders were monks, like Peng Yingyu. Other groups were made of farm workers.

Many different leaders led these fights. One group was in the north. Another group was in the south. A man named Zhang Shicheng also led a large group of followers. These many fights caused the Yuan dynasty to fall apart. By 1368, the old rulers lost their power. This change helped a new time begin in China.

Many things made life very hard for people during this time. The Yellow River flooded the land many times. There were also many sicknesses that spread through the country. One epidemic in 1331 killed 13 million people. Other sicknesses hit different areas between 1344 and 1362. These disasters made people feel that the government could not help them. Because of this, people began to look for new leaders.

The Red Turbans were religious groups that grew very quickly. They first appeared in the 1330s in Jiangxi and Hunan. These groups held night meetings to burn incense. They worshipped a figure named Mile Pusa. A Buddhist monk named Peng Yingyu helped start the movement. He taught that a new Buddha would come to end suffering. This idea helped the movement spread across half of China.

The Red Turban Rebellions were a series of massive uprisings against the Yuan dynasty. These rebellions occurred between 1351 and 1368. They eventually led to the total collapse of Mongol rule in China. The Yuan dynasty was the empire led by the Mongols. After the rebellions, the remaining imperial court moved north. Historians call this period the Northern Yuan. These uprisings were not just one single war. Instead, they were many different movements fighting for power.

The trouble began with internal fighting in the Yuan imperial court. In the early 1300s, the court split into two main factions. One group wanted policies that favored Mongol and Inner Asian interests. The other group wanted a governing style based on Han Chinese Confucian traditions. This conflict led to a coup in 1328. The group favored Confucianism enthroned Kusala, also known as Emperor Mingzong. Kusala promoted Chinese art, poetry, and calligraphy. He even established a new academy for Chinese learning. However, Kusala was assassinated by supporters of his half-brother, Tugh Temür. This political instability continued through the reigns of several more emperors.

At the same time, the Yuan military was losing its strength. Most of the army consisted of professional Han soldiers. These soldiers were often stationed in garrisons across the empire. However, these garrisons declined significantly by the end of the 13th century. By 1340, the government repeatedly failed to stop local rebellions. For example, a small gang of 36 bandits took over a temple in Huashan. Government forces from three provinces could not defeat them for three months. Only local salt-field workers were able to stop the bandits. This made the people believe the central government was useless. This led to a process called decentralization, where local leaders took more control.

Natural disasters and disease made the situation even worse. The Yellow River flooded the land constantly during the 1340s. At the same time, the empire faced massive epidemics. In 1331, an epidemic in Hebei killed 13 million people by 1333. Other major outbreaks occurred in Fujian, Shandong, and Jiangsu between 1344 and 1362. In 1358 alone, 200,000 people died in Shanxi and Hebei. These disasters, combined with high military costs, created ripe conditions for revolt. Religious groups began to warn people about impending doom. These groups often used the chaos to undermine Yuan authority.

The Red Turbans were religious sects that grew very quickly. They first appeared in Jiangxi and Hunan during the 1330s. They spread to half of China within twelve years. These followers held night gatherings to burn incense and worship Mile Pusa. A Buddhist monk named Peng Yingyu helped lead the movement. He taught that the Maitreya, the Buddha of wealth and radiance, would arrive. He believed this Buddha would end all human suffering. The movement split into two main branches. The northern Red Turbans were based in the Huai River region. The southern Red Turbans were located in southern Hubei.

Different leaders controlled these various Red Turban groups. In the north, Han Shantong and Liu Futong recruited 150,000 workers. These workers were originally meant to rechannel the Yellow River. They proclaimed Han Lin'er as the emperor of a restored Song dynasty. In the south, the movement was led by figures like Xu Shouhui and Chen Youliang. Chen Youliang eventually seized power and renamed the dynasty the Han. He expanded his territory rapidly into Sichuan. Another powerful leader was Zhang Shicheng. He was a former boatman who controlled many cities in Jiangsu. He even declared himself the Prince of Wu.

The rebellions ended when one leader rose above the rest. Zhu Yuanzhang emerged as a major force during this period. He fought against several other leaders, including Chen Youliang and Zhang Shicheng. In 1363, Zhu and Chen fought a long battle at Lake Poyang. Chen was eventually defeated and killed. Zhu also defeated Zhang Shicheng after a long siege at Suzhou. By 1368, the Yuan dynasty had lost its control over China. The era of the Red Turbans helped clear the way for a new dynasty. This period changed the political landscape of East Asia forever.
