The red color comes from myoglobin. This is a protein found in the meat.

Red meat has many good things in it. It has iron and zinc. It also has B vitamins. These help our bodies stay healthy.

But eating too much meat can be risky. It may lead to heart disease or type 2 diabetes. It can also cause cancer.

Processed meat is even riskier. This is meat that is salted, cured, or smoked. Examples are ham, bacon, and hot dogs.

Experts suggest eating less red meat. The World Cancer Research Fund says to eat no more than three portions a week. This is about 350 to 500 grams of cooked meat. You might choose fish, beans, or nuts instead.
