Unlike a disposable battery, which you throw away after one use, a rechargeable battery can be used many times. These are often called secondary cells or accumulators. The name accumulator comes from the way they gather and store energy. They come in many shapes and sizes. Some are tiny button cells used in small gadgets. Others are huge systems used to keep electrical networks steady.

These batteries work through a reversible electrochemical reaction. This means the chemical changes inside can go forward and backward. Inside the battery, there are one or more electrochemical cells. During charging, the positive material is oxidized to release electrons. At the same time, the negative material is reduced to absorb them. These moving electrons create the current flow in an external circuit.

An electrolyte helps ions move between the electrodes during this process. Some electrolytes act as a simple buffer, while others participate actively in the reaction.

Scientists and engineers have developed many different types of batteries over time. Some common types use lead-acid or nickel-cadmium materials. Others use nickel-metal hydride or various lithium-ion combinations.

You might find lithium iron phosphate or lithium-ion polymer in modern devices. Researchers are currently investing billions of dollars to make these even better. They want to make batteries lighter, smaller, and cheaper for everyone. This work helps create better tools for electric cars and renewable energy.

Batteries power almost everything in our modern world. Small ones provide energy for phones, power tools, and household appliances.

Larger batteries power motorized wheelchairs, golf carts, and electric bicycles. They are even used in big vehicles like cars, trucks, and trains. Some very large systems power ships, locomotives, and even small airplanes.

Battery storage stations use them to save energy from solar panels to use at night. This process is called load-leveling because it balances power use.

Using a battery correctly is very important for its life. If you charge a battery the wrong way, it can overheat or even catch fire.

Fast chargers can work in as little as fifteen minutes. However, they must use sensors to stop charging before the battery gets too hot. Some chargers take much longer, sometimes over fourteen hours, to reach a full charge. You can also use solar power to charge some small batteries.
