Rebecca is a famous Gothic novel written by the English author Daphne du Maurier. Published in 1938, it is a dark and mysterious story about secrets and jealousy. The book follows a young, unnamed woman who marries a wealthy man named Maxim de Winter.

She soon moves into his huge estate in Cornwall called Manderley. However, she feels like she is living in the shadow of Maxim's first wife, Rebecca. Even though Rebecca is gone, her memory seems to fill every room of the house. The story is famous for its thick, heavy atmosphere that makes the house feel like a character itself.

The plot moves through many layers of mystery and tension. The young narrator feels very small and lonely in the big house. A cold housekeeper named Mrs. Danvers tries to make the new wife feel unimportant. Mrs. Danvers was once Rebecca's maid and is obsessed with her former mistress.

The tension grows during a costume ball at the estate. Everything changes when a shipwreck is found near the coast. A diver discovers Rebecca's old boat and her remains inside it. This discovery leads to a shocking truth about what really happened the night Rebecca died at sea.

Daphne du Maurier worked hard to finish this dark tale. She began thinking about themes of jealousy many years before she wrote it. In 1937, she signed a deal to write three books for her publisher, Victor Gollancz. She even received an advance of £1,000 for her work. Writing was not always easy for her during this time. She once described her early writing attempts as a "literary miscarriage."

She eventually finished the manuscript in early 1938 after spending Christmas working on it.

There are many important details and people in this story. The setting of Manderley is a grand estate in the West Country of England. The main characters include the timid narrator and the reserved Maxim de Winter. Other characters like Jack Favell and Beatrice Lacy help reveal the truth. The book was a huge success and sold 2.8 million copies between 1938 and 1965.
