François Claudius Ravachol was a prominent French illegalist anarchist. He lived from 1859 to 1892. He is often called the "Christ of Anarchy." This name refers to his massive impact on French society. His life moved from common crime to intense political activism. He became a central figure in the anarchist movement. His actions helped launch the Ère des attentats. This was a period of anarchist terrorism from 1892 to 1894.

Ravachol's early life in Saint-Chamond was defined by extreme poverty. His father, Jean Adam Koenigstein, abandoned the family after being violent. His mother, Marie Ravachol, worked as a laborer in the silk industry. Ravachol had to beg for money to help his family. He left school at age eleven due to bullying. He worked many difficult jobs, including shepherd and miner. He even played the accordion for five francs per evening.

As an adult, Ravachol underwent a process of radicalization. He attended study circles to read socialist and anarchist newspapers. He began to distance himself from religious ideas. In 1891, he committed several crimes, including the murder of a hermit named Jacques Brunel. He also attempted to rob a grave. Eventually, he moved to Paris to join other militants. He met activists like Rosalie Soubère and Joseph Jas-Béala. This group became a highly organized militant cell.

Specific events acted as a catalyst for his violent actions. In 1891, the Fourmies massacre occurred when the army fired on demonstrators. Later, the Clichy affair saw anarchists arrested and beaten by police. Judge Edmond Benoît and prosecutor Léon Bulot were responsible for harsh sentences. These events deeply shocked the anarchist community. Ravachol decided to strike back at these specific magistrates. To prepare, his group stole thirty kilograms of dynamite from a quarry.

The group's tactics represented a shift in the history of terrorism. They moved away from targeting individuals to targeting locations. On March 11, 1892, they carried out the Saint-Germain bombing. Rosalie Soubère helped transport the bomb under her skirts. Ravachol placed the device on the second floor of a building. The explosion injured one person but caused no deaths. The intended target, Judge Benoît, lived on the fifth floor and was unharmed.

Ravachol was arrested shortly after the second attack. During his trial, he took full responsibility for the bombings. He did this to protect his companions from legal trouble. The jury granted him mitigating circumstances, but he was later sentenced to death for the murder of the hermit. He was executed by guillotine on July 11, 1892, in Montbrison.

His death had a lasting significance in French culture. Because he protected his friends, many saw him as a martyr. He became a folk hero for some and a cultural archetype for others. He is often portrayed in art as a vigilante or a rebel. Traditional Parisian songs even use his image to mock the wealthy. His life remains a study of how social hardship can lead to political violence.
