People grow it mostly for its oil-rich seeds. It is a very important crop for the whole world. In fact, it is the third-largest source of vegetable oil. It is also the second-largest source of protein meal. Some people call it canola.

Canola is a special type of rapeseed. These plants have very low levels of erucic acid. That acid can be mildly toxic to humans. Because canola is safe, we use it for food.

The plant has a very interesting way it works. It starts with bright yellow flowers. These flowers have four petals in a cross shape. They grow in a line from the bottom bud upward. After the flowers bloom, the plant grows green pods. These pods are called siliquae.

Each pod has two sides separated by a wall. Inside these sides, rows of small seeds develop. The seeds are round and hard. They are black when they are fully grown.

Humans have grown plants like this for a long time. Some crops in the Brassica family were grown 10,000 years ago. Rapeseed was grown in India as early as 4000 B.C.E. It spread to China and Japan 2000 years ago. In 1973, scientists in Canada started a campaign for canola. They wanted to help people use the oil for food. This helped the plant become very popular worldwide.

Farmers grow different types of rapeseed depending on the weather. Winter rapeseed is sown in the autumn. It stays low to the ground during the cold winter. In the spring, it grows a long stem. It flowers in late spring and ripens by midsummer. Spring rapeseed is different because it is not winter-hardy. It is sown in the spring and grows quickly.

This type is grown in Canada and Australia.

Many things in nature help the rapeseed plant grow. Wind helps move pollen from flower to flower. However, bees are even better at this job. If bees visit the flowers, the yield can almost double. The plant also needs many nutrients from the soil. It has a very high demand for sulphur.

Farmers must also watch out for many pests. Insects like beetles and weevils like to eat the seeds. Farmers use different tools to keep the plants healthy.
