Rajaraja I was one of the most famous leaders of the Chola empire. He ruled from the year 985 until 1014.
When he started his rule, his kingdom was quite small. It was mostly located around the Thanjavur and Tiruchirappalli regions. Rajaraja worked hard to turn this small area into a huge empire. He built a very powerful army and a strong navy.
His military campaigns took him to many different lands. In 988, he had a major victory at Kandalur Salai. This battle likely used his powerful navy to help his soldiers.

In the north, Rajaraja faced the Western Chalukyas in many battles. In 1004, he won the Battle of Gangavadi against the Chalukya army. He also won the Battle of Annigeri. In that fight, he defeated a leader named Satyashraya. After these wins, Rajaraja brought back treasures and gold flowers. He gave these gifts to the temples in his capital. He became known as Mummudi Chola, which means "Three Crowned." This showed he ruled the Chola, Pandya, and Chera kingdoms.
Aside from being a warrior, Rajaraja was a great builder and organizer. He built the huge Rajarajeshwaram Temple in Thanjavur.
Rajaraja I was a powerful emperor of the Chola dynasty. He ruled from 985 to 1014. His birth name was Arulmoli Varman, which means "The Word of Sun Clan." He was born around 947. His father was King Parantaka II, also known as Sundara Chola. Rajaraja took the throne after a period of many different family members competing for power. He chose the regnal name Rajaraja, which means "King among Kings."
When Rajaraja began his reign, his kingdom was relatively small. It was centered around the Thanjavur and Tiruchirappalli regions. He worked to transform this area into a massive, organized empire. To do this, he built a very strong army and a powerful navy.
His military campaigns began with a major victory in 988. This occurred at Kandalur Salai in present-day Kerala. This victory likely involved the Chola navy.
In 993, Rajaraja expanded his empire into northern Sri Lanka. This happened during a time of civil unrest in the city of Anuradhapura. The local government was struggling with economic policies and unpaid Tamil mercenaries.
In the north, Rajaraja faced the Western Chalukyas in several wars. In 1004, he won the Battle of Gangavadi. This victory allowed him to control the Gangavadi province and the lands of the Changalvas and Kongalvas.
Beyond warfare, Rajaraja was a highly effective administrator. In the year 1000, he began a massive land survey and assessment project. This project helped him reorganize the Tamil country into specific units called valanadus.

Rajaraja I left a lasting legacy that changed the region forever. He turned a recovering kingdom into a dominant maritime power. His reign connected different parts of India and the Indian Ocean through trade and conquest. When he died in 1014, his son Rajendra Chola I succeeded him. Rajendra would continue to expand the empire that his father had built. The era of Rajaraja remains a central part of South Indian history.
