It weighs about 25 tonnes.
Many people visit to see the art. The temple has beautiful carvings and paintings. Some art was lost during old wars. People still add new shrines to the complex. The temple is also famous for its bronze statues. One famous statue is of Nataraja, the lord of dance.
The Brihadisvara Temple is a huge Hindu temple in India.

Inside the temple, the layout follows very strict rules. It uses symmetry and geometry to stay balanced. The complex is shaped like a large rectangle. It has five main sections for people to visit. There is a main sanctum at the center. This is the most sacred room in the temple.
An emperor named Rajaraja I built this great temple. He ruled during the Chola dynasty. He started the work between 1003 and 1010 CE. The king even gave the temple its own name. He called it Rajarajeshvaram. This name means "the temple of the god of Rajaraja." The temple shows the skill of Chola architects. They learned how to build with very heavy stone. Their work changed how temples were made in South India.

History has brought many changes to the temple. Wars and raids caused some damage over the years. Some of the old artwork was lost during these times. However, many different rulers added new shrines later. Some even painted new murals over the old ones.
The Brihadisvara Temple is a massive Shaivite Hindu temple located in Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu, India.

The temple complex follows strict rules of axial and symmetrical geometry. It is classified as a Perunkoil, or a large temple built on a high platform. The layout forms a rectangle that resembles two stacked squares. There are five primary sections within this space. First is the sanctum, which contains the towering superstructure known as the sri vimana. Next is the Nandi-mandapam, a hall for the sacred bull. Between these lies the mukhamandapam, or the main community hall. The complex also includes the mahamandapam, a great gathering hall, and the Antrala, a connecting pavilion.
Architectural innovation allowed the Chola builders to scale up their work significantly. They mastered the use of heavy granite to create massive structures. The most striking feature is the vimana, a 16-storey tower above the shrine. Thirteen of these storeys are tapering squares that dominate the landscape. The tower is elaborately decorated with pilasters, piers, and attached columns. These elements are placed rhythmically across every surface. Inside the sanctum, or garbha griha, sits a huge stone linga. This linga is an aniconic representation of the deity Shiva.
Emperor Rajaraja I commissioned the temple during the Chola dynasty. Construction took place between 1003 and 1010 CE. The king originally named it Rajarajeshvaram, meaning "the temple of the god of Rajaraja." Later inscriptions suggest the name Peruvudaiyar Kovil also has deep roots in the temple's history. The Chola period marked a shift toward more complex architectural features. For example, they introduced multifaceted columns with projecting square capitals. This era saw the transition from securing borders to expressing power through grand monuments.
Throughout its long history, the temple has faced many changes. Raids and wars between different rulers caused physical damage. Some historical artwork and murals have been lost over time. However, subsequent Hindu dynasties worked to repair and renovate the site. Some rulers added new shrines, such as those for Kartikeya, Parvati, and Nandi. These additions occurred during the 16th and 17th-century Nayaka era. The Marathas of Thanjavur also helped maintain the temple. Even when new layers of murals were painted, builders respected the original symmetry.
The temple contains several remarkable individual monuments and sculptures. One of the most famous is the monolithic Nandi, a seated bull. This statue is carved from a single stone and weighs about 25 tonnes. It stands roughly 2 meters high and 6 meters long. The temple is also the source of the famous brass Nataraja sculptures. These depict Shiva as the lord of dance.

Today, the Brihadisvara Temple remains a vital cultural and religious center. It is one of the most visited tourist attractions in Tamil Nadu. The Archaeological Survey of India manages the site to ensure its preservation. Modern lighting has been installed to highlight the natural color of the stone. This helps visitors see the detailed sculptural forms in the courtyard. The temple also connects to the broader history of the region's development. In the 11th century, the Tamil people built an extensive irrigation network nearby. This system helped support agriculture and the movement of goods near the river delta.
