Rai Chand Boral was a great music maker from India. Many people call him the father of Indian film music. He was born in Calcutta in 1903. His father was a classical music expert. This helped Rai Chand learn many types of music. He studied with great players of the tabla and sarod. The sarod is a string instrument.

Boral worked at a place called New Theatres. He helped set new rules for movie music. In 1935, he did something very new. He used playback singing for the first time. This is when singers record songs for actors to use. He also mixed old styles of singing with new tunes.

He made music for 70 to 75 films. These movies were in Hindi and Bengali. In 1978, he won the Dadasaheb Phalke Award. This is the highest prize for Indian cinema.
