Signals travel through the air. Sometimes these signals get messy. This is called radio spectrum pollution. It happens when waves stray from their paths. This can hurt communication.

Some mess comes from nature. Lightning strikes make messy signals. Gases in the air do this too. Space also sends signals to Earth. These come from the Sun and other stars. These can make it hard to talk to satellites.

Other mess comes from tools. Some lights can leak signals. Even antennas can cause trouble. People also use pirate radio. This is radio used without permission. In the United States, a law called the PIRATE Act helps stop this.

Some people study how these waves affect life. High frequencies can cause dielectric heating. This is when waves cause heat. The World Health Organization says these waves might cause cancer. Most groups say signals are only risky at very high levels.

Many groups manage these waves. The FCC makes rules for most signals in the US. The ITU helps countries work together.
