Radar chart

Imagine you want to compare many different things at the same time.

A radar chart is a special way to show this information visually. It uses several lines that all start from one single center point. These lines are called radii, and each one represents a different variable. For example, one line might show how fast a car goes. Another line might show how much fuel it uses.

When you mark the data on each line and connect them, a shape appears. This shape often looks like a star or a spider web. Because of this look, people call them spider charts or web charts. They are also known as star plots or Kiviat diagrams.

These charts work by showing the size of each piece of data. The length of each spoke is proportional to the value of that variable. If a value is very large, the line will be long. If a value is small, the line will be short.

By looking at the shape, you can quickly see patterns. You can find clusters where many things are similar. You can also spot outliers, which are points that are very different from the rest. This makes them helpful for seeing the strengths and weaknesses of a single thing. You can even overlap different shapes to see how two things compare.

People have used these types of charts for a long time.

The star plot was first used by Georg von Mayr in 1877. Since then, many different names have been used for them. Some people call them cobweb charts or polar charts. They are also called irregular polygons in some math books. Today, they are a common tool for looking at complex data. They help us turn many numbers into one clear picture.

There are many ways to use these charts in real life.

In sports, coaches use them to study players. For instance, a chart can show a baseball player's batting stats. It can compare a player like Shohei Ohtani to the league average. In science, researchers use them to study how well different drugs work. They might look at cost and side effects on the same chart. Even computer programmers use them to test how fast their programs run. They can compare speed, memory usage, and power usage all at once.

However, radar charts can sometimes be tricky to read. It can be hard to judge the exact length of the spokes. This is because our eyes struggle with radial distances. The area inside the shape can also be misleading. This happens because the area grows much faster than the lines themselves. If you have too many points, the chart can become very cluttered. It is best to use them for smaller sets of data. If you have hundreds of points, the chart might become too messy to understand.
