Radar is a way to find things from far away.

The name comes from a phrase used by the U.S. Navy. It stands for "radio detection and ranging." This means using radio waves to find objects and see how far they are.

A radar system has a few main parts. A transmitter makes radio waves. These waves travel through the air. They hit an object and bounce back. This is like an echo. A receiver catches the waves when they return.

By looking at these waves, we can learn a lot. We can find an object's direction. We can find its distance. We can even see how fast it moves.

Many people helped make radar work. In 1935, Robert Watson-Watt and Arnold Wilkins did important tests in the UK. They used a big radio station to find a plane.
