Quintessence (physics)

physical science Maturity 9-11 Next article →

The universe is growing faster and faster. Scientists think a special energy helps this happen. They call this energy quintessence. It might be a fifth force in our world.

Quintessence is different from other ideas. Some thinkers suggest a constant energy. But quintessence is dynamic. This means it changes over time. It can even push or pull. About ten billion years ago, it began to push. This happened 3.5 billion years after the Big Bang.

In the past, quintessence acted like radiation. Radiation is a type of energy. Later, it started to act like dark energy. This helped it take over the universe.

Some models suggest a scary idea. It is called phantom dark energy. In this model, the energy grows very fast. It could cause a Big Rip. This would tear the universe apart.

The name comes from an old Latin word. It means a fifth element. Long ago, people thought a fifth part made the stars. Today, we study it to learn about space.
