Dark energy is a mysterious force. It is spread out smoothly across all of space. It does not clump together like stars or planets. Even though it is very thin, it is very powerful. Dark energy makes up about 68% of the universe. Ordinary matter, like the things we can see, only makes up 5%.

Scientists first found proof of this through supernovae. These are very bright exploding stars. By looking at these stars, experts saw the universe was speeding up. One idea is called the cosmological constant. This is a term for energy that fills empty space. Because this energy is part of space itself, it does not fade away. As space grows, more of this energy appears. This makes the universe expand even faster.
