To the Aztecs, he was a creator deity who helped make mankind. He was also linked to the wind, the Sun, and the planet Venus. He served as a patron for merchants, artists, and the priesthood. Many people viewed him as a god of wisdom, learning, and intelligence.

This deity functioned through many different forms and aspects.

In his form as Ehecatl, he represented the wind. He was associated with animals like spider monkeys and ducks in this role. When appearing as the morning star, Venus, he was sometimes depicted as a harpy eagle.

Other animals thought to represent him include the resplendent quetzal, crows, macaws, and rattlesnakes. In Aztec culture, his depictions were often anthropomorphic, meaning they had human-like features. Some images even show him with a beard. These varied forms allowed him to connect with different natural and celestial forces.

The history of the feathered serpent spans many centuries and cultures.

The earliest known documentation of this worship occurred in Teotihuacan. This happened during the first century BC or first century AD. By the Late Classic period, between 600 and 900 AD, veneration had spread throughout Mesoamerica. During the Postclassic period, from 900 to 1519 AD, worship centered in the religious hub of Cholula. In the Maya region, he was known by names like Kukulkan or Gukumatz. These names also roughly translate to "feathered serpent" in Mayan languages.

Archaeologists have found many physical objects used to honor this deity.

Religious rulers often wore a special wind jewel called an *ehēcacōzcatl*. This was a conch shell cut at the cross-section and worn as a necklace. It likely symbolized elemental forces like hurricanes, whirlpools, or dust devils.

In the city of Cholula, people built the world's largest pyramid dedicated to his worship. At sites like Xochicalco, feathered serpent imagery appears on temples. These findings show how deeply the deity was integrated into political and religious life. The iconography moved from being fully zoomorphic to including human features over time.

Scholars offer different interpretations of the deity's specific functions.

Archaeologist Karl Taube suggests the feathered serpent symbolized fertility and internal political structures. This stands in contrast to the "War Serpent" which symbolized military expansion. Historian Enrique Florescano argues the deity was part of an agricultural triad. This group included the Goddess of the Cave and the rain god, Tlaloc. In this view, the feathered serpent represented vegetational renewal. His connection to Venus was vital because the planet signaled the start of the rainy season.

There are many different myths regarding the birth of Quetzalcōātl.

One version says he was born to a virgin named Chimalman after a dream. Another story claims Chimalman conceived him by swallowing an emerald. A third narrative says an arrow hit her in the womb. A fourth version states he was born from the goddess Coatlicue. Some myths describe him as one of four sons of Ometecuhtli and Omecihuatl. These stories show the many ways different groups understood his origins.

Quetzalcōātl remains connected to broader historical and political ideas.

Following the 16th-century Spanish conquest, some records linked him to a ruler named Ce Acatl Topiltzin. Historians debate if these stories describe real historical events. Early Spanish clerics also tried to identify the god-ruler with Hernán Cortés or Thomas the Apostle. These identifications created many different opinions about his true nature. Regardless of these debates, historian David Carrasco argues he was a patron of civilization. He was a god of culture and the urban center throughout Mesoamerican history.
