These are the big Qin mountains.

The Qin mountains are in China.
They sit between the north and the south. These mountains divide two big river areas.
Many plants and animals live here. You might see a brown and white panda!
Some plants are very old. One kind of tree is one of the oldest in the world.
People can travel through the mountains by train. It is a very special place.
The Qinling mountains sit in southern Shaanxi Province, China.
Many plants and animals live here. You might see a Qinling panda. This panda is a brown-and-white kind of giant panda. About 250 to 280 of these pandas live in the mountains.
The mountains have many types of forests. Some trees, like the ginkgo, are very old. The highest peak is Mount Taibai. It is west of the old capital, Xi'an. In the past, only four passes let people cross the range. Now, people can use a railway tunnel to travel through. This makes it easier to move across the mountains.
The Qinling Mountains are a huge mountain range in China. They sit in the southern part of Shaanxi Province. These mountains run from east to west across the land.
Nature works in many ways within these mountains. The mountains act as a barrier for weather and water. To the north, the land is often dry and semi-arid. This happens because the mountains cast a rain shadow. To the south, the weather is milder with more rain.
History shows how people have used these mountains for a long time. In the past, the mountains were a natural defense. They protected lands from invasions coming from the north. This was because only four passes allowed people to cross through.
There are many amazing facts about this place. The highest peak is called Mount Taibai. It sits west of the ancient capital, Xi'an. Other famous peaks include Mount Hua, Mount Li, and Mount Maiji.
The Qinling Mountains connect many different living things. Around 3,000 different types of plants have been found here. You can find the ginkgo tree, which is one of the oldest species.
The Qinling Mountains, also known as the Qin Mountains, are a massive east-west range in southern Shaanxi Province, China. Formerly called the Nanshan, or "Southern Mountains," this range serves as a vital geographical boundary. It marks the dividing line between North and South China. The mountains also act as a major watershed. They separate the drainage basins of the Yellow River to the north and the Yangtze River to the south.
Weather patterns in the region are shaped by the physical height of the mountains. The range creates a rain shadow effect for the land to the north. This means the mountains block moisture, resulting in a semi-arid climate in the north. This northern side is often less fertile and has less species diversity. In contrast, the southern side experiences milder winters and more rainfall. This allows for warmer, temperate evergreen broadleaf forests to grow there.
The mountains feature several distinct forest layers based on elevation. At low elevations, the foothills are dominated by temperate deciduous trees. These include species like oaks, elms, common walnuts, maples, ash, and Celtis. You can also find evergreen species like broadleaf chinquapins and conifers such as Pinus massoniana. At middle elevations, conifers like Pinus armandii mix with birch, oaks, and hornbeams. Above 2,500 meters, the landscape shifts into subalpine forests. These high forests consist of firs, Cunninghamia, and birch, with abundant rhododendrons in the understory.
Historically, the Qinling Mountains have played a major role in Chinese security. The range acted as a natural defense against nomadic invasions from the north. This was largely because the mountains are difficult to cross, with only four passes available. Moving through the range was once a slow and difficult process. However, travel changed in the late 1990s with new engineering. The completion of a railway tunnel and a spiral helped ease travel across the range.
The geography of the range includes several significant peaks and valleys. To the north lies the densely populated Wei River valley, an ancient center of Chinese civilization. To the south is the Han River valley. The mountains are bordered by the Tibetan Plateau to the west. To the east, the lower Funiu and Daba Mountains rise from the coastal plain. The highest peak in the entire range is Mount Taibai. It is located west of the ancient Chinese capital, Xi'an. Other culturally important peaks include Mount Hua, Mount Li, and Mount Maiji.
The biodiversity in the Qinling is truly remarkable. Scientists have documented around 3,000 different plant species in the region. This includes the ginkgo, which is thought to be one of the oldest tree species on Earth. The mountains are also home to the endemic Qinling panda. This is a unique brown-and-white subspecies of the giant panda. There are an estimated 250 to 280 of these pandas living in the range. This represents about one-fifth of the entire wild giant panda population.
Many other rare animals rely on this ecosystem for survival. Mammals such as the Asiatic black bear, clouded leopard, and golden snub-nosed monkey live here. You can also find the golden takin and the Asiatic golden cat. The range supports many birds, including the crested ibis and the golden eagle. One of the most notable residents is the Chinese giant salamander. At up to 1.8 meters, it is one of the largest amphibians in the world. Because it is critically endangered, people use nature reserves and captive-breeding programs to help it survive.
