It sits within the Strait of Hormuz, a vital waterway near the southern coast of Iran. The island is separated from the Iranian mainland by the Clarence Strait. It belongs to Qeshm County in the Hormozgan province. Because of its location, the island holds great strategic importance. It is situated a few kilometers from the southern Iranian shoreline. It sits opposite the port cities of Bandar Abbas and Bandar Khamir. The island is 135 km long. At its widest point near the center, it spans 28 km. At its narrowest point, it measures about 4.5 km. The total surface area is approximately 890 square kilometers. This makes it almost twice the size of Bahrain.

The island features unique geological formations that attract scientists. One of the most significant sites is the Namakdan Salt Cave. This cave is 6.6 km long. It is one of the longest salt caves known in the world. The cave formed inside a large salt dome. This dome consists of layers of strata dating from the late Proterozoic era. Historically, people have mined both salt and sulphur in this area. The name "namak" means salt in Farsi. In October 2022, it was named one of the first 100 IUGS Geological Heritage Sites. This honor recognizes its importance to our understanding of tectonics. Tectonics refers to the large-scale movements of the Earth's crust. The cave is also a candidate for the UNESCO World Heritage list.

Qeshm Island has a very long and complex history. Evidence of human life dates back to the Paleolithic Period. Stone tools have been discovered at a site called Bam-e Qeshm. Throughout the pre-Islamic era, many different groups inhabited the area. Names like Keshm and Kish suggest the long presence of the Elamites. In the 2nd century CE, Ptolemy referred to the island as Alexandria or Aracia. Later, in the 4th century, Ammianus Marcellinus also called it Alexandria. The island's position near the mouth of the Persian Gulf made it a target for many invaders. These included the Umayyads, Abbasids, Portuguese, English, and Dutch. Under Sasanian rule between 224 and 651 CE, the island was named Abarkawan.

The island has functioned as a major center for trade and navigation for centuries. During the Dailamite and Buyid eras, its economy flourished greatly. Trade vessels traveled from places as far as China, India, and Eastern Africa. These ships would sail past or stop at the island. In 1622, the explorer William Baffin was mortally wounded here. This happened during the Anglo-Persian capture of Qeshm from Portuguese forces. In the modern era, the island has seen significant conflict. On 3 July 1988, Iran Air Flight 655 was shot down by the USS Vincennes. This occurred just south of the island during the Iran–Iraq War. All 290 people on board were killed, and the wreckage fell 2.5 km off the coast.

Today, the island's economy relies on several different sectors. Fishing is a leading occupation for the local people. Some inhabitants also build dhow vessels, which are traditional sailing boats. On the limited cultivated land, people grow melons and dates. Salt is also mined along the southeastern coast. In 1991, the government designated Qeshm as a "Trade and Industrial Free Area." This status allows the island to follow different policies than the central government. This helps the economy grow by reducing obstacles. The island also has the right to develop its own oil and gas reserves.

Tourism is another vital part of life on Qeshm. The island is the first national geopark in Iran. It is famous for ecotourism, especially the Hara marine forests. These forests are very important for migratory birds. About 1.5% of the world's birds and 25% of Iran's native birds visit annually. Visitors also go to the Nazz Islands to the south. These islands feature corals, oysters, and colorful fish.
