People think they chose this name because they painted black sheep on their flags. Others believe it refers to the color of their sheep flocks. They were a Muslim monarchy with a rich Persianate culture. This group ruled many lands from about 1374 to 1468. Their territory included parts of modern Azerbaijan, Armenia, and Iraq. It also covered parts of Iran, Turkey, and Georgia.

These tribes were made of several different groups. The ruling family came from the Yıwa tribe. Other tribes included the Saadlu, Karamanlu, and Alpaut. There were also the Agacheri, Dukharlu, Jagirlu, and Hajilu tribes. These people were part of the Oghuz Turks. They were nomadic people who moved with their animals. Over time, they built a strong state that ruled large areas. They held power for nearly one hundred years.

History shows that the Qara Qoyunlu had many struggles. In 1400, the Timurid Empire defeated them. A leader named Qara Yusuf had to flee to Egypt. He was even kept in prison in Damascus.

After the leader Timur died in 1405, Qara Yusuf was released. He returned to fight for his land. He won a big battle at Nakhchivan in 1406. By 1410, he captured Tabriz and Baghdad. This helped the group become fully independent.

Different leaders brought different changes to the lands they ruled. A leader named Qara Iskander ruled for a time. His rule was often difficult for the people in Armenia. He fought many wars with the Timurids. Later, his brother Jahan Shah became the ruler in 1436.

We can still see the legacy of the Qara Qoyunlu today. Their culture helped shape the Azerbaijani language. Many researchers say their way of speaking led to modern Azerbaijani.

The name Qara Qoyunlu literally translates to \"those with black sheep.\" Historians suggest this name came from black sheep painted on their tribal flags. Another theory suggests it simply described the color of their large animal flocks. Some think the name relates to ancient totemic symbols. However, the historian Rashid al-Din Hamadani noted that Turks usually did not eat their totem animals. Since mutton was a main part of their diet, a totem theory is unlikely. \n\nThe Qara Qoyunlu were composed of many different Turkoman tribes. The ruling family belonged to the Yıwa tribe, specifically the Baharlu branch. These people lived north of Lake Van and Mosul in Upper Mesopotamia. Other important tribes included the Saadlu, the Karamanlu, and the Alpaut. The Agacheri, Dukharlu, Jagirlu, and Hajilu tribes also made up the federation.

These groups were part of the Oghuz Turks. They were largely nomadic, moving with their herds across the landscape. This tribal structure allowed them to form a massive political force. Over time, these groups transitioned from nomadic life to ruling settled territories. \n\nThe rise of the Qara Qoyunlu involved many conflicts with neighboring powers. In the late 1300s, they were often vassals to the Jalayirid Sultanate. The Jalayirids were a powerful group based in Baghdad and Tabriz. In 1400, the mighty Timurid Empire, led by Timur, defeated the Qara Qoyunlu. The leader Qara Yusuf was forced to flee to Egypt for safety. He was eventually imprisoned in Damascus alongside the Jalayirid sultan Ahmad. [IMAGE:File:The_Monastery, 1407-08 (Topkapı Palace Museum, TSMK H.2153) f.1
