A puppet state is a country that is not truly free. It looks independent to the rest of the world. It has its own name and a flag. It might even have a constitution and a national anthem.

However, a larger outside power is actually in charge. This outside power uses military or money to control the state. The local government must follow the orders of the stronger nation. This setup lets the larger power avoid responsibility for its actions. It makes the smaller government look like it is making its own choices.

The term comes from a metaphor about a puppet. A puppeteer uses strings to move a wooden figure. In this case, the larger nation pulls the strings of the state. This is different from a true ally. Allies choose to work together through voluntary treaties. Puppet states are forced to agree to things already decided.

They are often called appendages of the larger state. International law does not see these occupied states as legitimate. They are not considered real, independent nations.

History shows many examples of this kind of control. In the early 1800s, Napoleon created many small republics. These were called sister republics in places like Italy. For example, the Italian Republic existed from 1802 to 1805.

In the late 1800s, Britain established a state in Zanzibar. Later, in 1917, Germany and Austria-Hungary created a Polish monarchy. This was done to use the land and its people. Eventually, the state became the independent Second Polish Republic in 1918.

They also led the State of Burma from 1942 to 1945. In India, Subhas Chandra Bose led the Azad Hind government. This group had its own banks and a cabinet.

In Europe, Germany and Italy also controlled many lands. For instance, the Kingdom of Albania was an Italian protectorate. In Hungary, the Germans installed Ferenc Szálasi as Prime Minister in 1944.

Puppet states do not last forever. There are three main ways they end. First, the master state might lose a war. This happened in Europe and Asia in 1945. Second, the puppet state might be absorbed into the master state. This happened in the early Soviet Union.

Third, the state can achieve true independence. This means the people finally gain real control. Understanding these states helps us see how power works in history. It shows how nations try to control others through different methods.
