These traps use sharp spikes. Makers use wood or bamboo. They sharpen the points and heat them. Then, they set them in holes. People often hide these holes. They use grass, crops, or brush to hide them.

Some traps use a pit. A person might fall into the pit. The sticks may line the sides. They might point down at an angle. This makes it hard to move a leg. Other times, the sticks are used in an ambush. A person might dive for cover and hit a stick. The sticks often hit the foot or lower leg.

Sometimes, people coat the sticks in poison. They might use plant poison or animal venom. This can cause an infection. The goal was not always to kill. Often, the goal was to wound a person. This would slow down a group. It would force them to stop and help. This happened during the Vietnam War. These traps are now banned by the Geneva Convention. This is a set of international laws. They banned these traps in 1980.
