Pulsar

space Maturity 9-11 Next article →

A pulsar is a special kind of star. It is a neutron star. These stars are very dense and heavy.

They spin around very fast. A pulsar has a strong magnetic field. This field sends out beams of light from its poles.

We only see these beams when they point at Earth. This makes the star look like it is blinking. It works just like a lighthouse.

Pulsars are very steady. They can act like clocks in space. Some spin many times in just one second.

In 1967, Jocelyn Bell found the first pulsar. At first, people thought the signals were from aliens. They even used the nickname "little green men."

Soon, they found a second pulsar. This proved the signals were natural. We now know pulsars are real stars. They can even have planets around them.
