Puebla is a sovereign state located in east-central Mexico. It is one of the 31 states that make up the Federal Entities of Mexico. The state has a triangular shape, with its narrowest part located in the north. It covers a total area of 33,919 square kilometers. This size makes it the 20th largest state in the country.

Puebla is divided into 217 municipalities. The capital city is Puebla City, which serves as a major economic hub. The state borders several other Mexican states. These include Veracruz to the north and east. To the west, it borders Hidalgo, México, Tlaxcala, and Morelos. To the south, it is bordered by Guerrero and Oaxaca.

The history of the state is closely tied to the founding of its capital. The Spanish founded Puebla City in 1531 within a local valley. They built the city to secure a vital trade route. This route connected Mexico City to the port of Veracruz. By the end of the 18th century, the area functioned as a colonial province. It had its own governor during this time. After the Mexican War of Independence in the early 19th century, it officially became the State of Puebla.

Today, the state is one of the most industrialized in Mexico. Much of this economic growth is concentrated around the capital city.

The geography of Puebla is defined by its location in the central highlands. The state sits between the Sierra Nevada and the Sierra Madre Oriental. These mountain ranges create many different landscapes. Much of the mountain terrain belongs to the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt.

The Sierra Norte del Puebla enters from the northwest. It breaks into smaller chains like the Sierra de Zacatlán and the Sierra de Huauchinango. Some of the highest points in the state are massive volcanoes. Pico de Orizaba, also called Citlaltepetl, reaches 5,747 meters above sea level.

Other major peaks include Popocatépetl at 5,452 meters and Iztaccíhuatl at 5,286 meters. The Malinche volcano reaches 4,461 meters on the border with Tlaxcala.

Puebla's land is divided into several distinct natural subregions. The Huasteco Plateau and the Llanuras y Lomeríos zone are in the north and northeast. Together, these two areas account for over 50% of the state's total area. The Sur de Puebla is located in the southwest and covers 26% of the state. Other regions include the Mixteca Alta and the Cordillera Costera del Sur. These western and southwestern areas cover less than 2.5% of the land. The eastern and northeastern areas, such as Chiconquiaco, make up about 3% of the state. The remaining 15% is spread across several southern subregions like the Sierras Orientales.

The state's hydrology is managed through three major river systems. The first system is based on the Balsas River, also known as the Atoyac. This river begins with melting runoff from the Halos, Telapón, and Papagayo mountains. It also receives water from the Iztaccihuatl volcano and the Zahuapan River.

Tributaries like the Acateno and Amacuzac feed into this system. The Valsequllo dam is a major feature of this river. This water eventually flows west to reach the Pacific Ocean. The second system empties into the Gulf of Mexico. It includes rivers such as the Pantepec, Cazones, and Necaxa. This system uses the Necaxa and Mazatepec dams. The third system is the closed Oriental Basin. This area contains many small lakes and freshwater springs. Some of these springs are heated by volcanic activity. Notable lakes include Alchichica and Chapulco.

Because of the varying altitudes, Puebla has eleven different climate zones. Five of these zones are the most common. The center and south have a temperate and semi-moist climate. The north is warm and hot, but it is also very wet. In contrast, the southeast has a semi-dry climate with warm temperatures. The high volcanic peaks experience a cold climate.

These different climates support three main ecosystems. Tropical rainforests can be found in many areas, including the Huasteca Plateau. These forests have a dense tree canopy that reaches 15 meters in height. Some species are evergreen, while others lose leaves during the dry season. Colder forests consist of pine and oak trees. These are mostly found in higher elevations.

In the high mountains, Pinus hartwegii is a dominant species. The third ecosystem consists of arid and semi-arid zones. These areas feature plants like mesquite, agave, and various cacti. Some southern mountainous areas are so dry they look like deserts.

Culture and people are central to the identity of Puebla. The state is home to five major indigenous groups. These are the Nahuas, the Totonacs, the Mixtecs, the Popolocas, and the Otomi.
