Public interest is a very important idea in social science and economics. It means the well-being or welfare of the whole public and society. This idea is at the heart of many democratic theories of government. It is often used alongside two other ideas called convenience and necessity. Leaders began to use this idea in their governing tools during the early 20th century. Since then, it has grown to include many different fields. Today, lawyers, journalists, and technology experts all use the term.

Some thinkers have clever ways to decide what is good for everyone. Economist Lok Sang Ho says we must look at the public interest fairly. He suggests a thought experiment to help people stay impartial. You should imagine you do not know who you will be in society. This is called the "veil of ignorance" approach. It was popularized by John Rawls in his 1971 book, "Theory of Justice." By doing this, you choose rules that are fair to everyone regardless of their role.

History shows that people have thought about this for a long time. The thinker John Stuart Mill wrote about this in the 1800s. He believed that following general rules helps everyone find happiness. This is better than trying to measure every single action. In the United States, the idea became part of real laws. The Transportation Act of 1920 used the term for the first time. Later, the Radio Act of 1927 also used it to make communication rules.

Many different jobs work to support the public interest every day. Engineers use it to build structures that are safe for people and nature. In law, it means helping people who cannot afford to pay for a lawyer. Organizations like the ACLU and the NAACP have done this work for a long time. Even regular people help through something called citizen science. In 2022, about 385,000 people from 192 countries joined the Great Backyard Bird Count. They logged bird sightings to help researchers protect different species.

Technology is also changing how we serve the public. Public interest technology focuses on solving problems in a way that helps people. It uses many subjects like history and ethics to guide its work. This field wants to make sure technology is socially responsible. In government, this is sometimes called e-government or digital government. For example, the U.S. passed the 21st Century Integrated Digital Experience Act in 2018. This law helps people find information on government websites more easily.
