Instead, they sat in two long, parallel grooves along the edges of the jaw. Each tooth was about 2.5 centimeters long and very thin. These teeth were made of enamel, dentine, and pulp, just like normal teeth. Despite their hardness, they were likely flexible and could bend up to 45 degrees.

To feed, Pterodaustro would strain small creatures from the water using its tooth comb. It likely targeted plankton, algae, and small crustaceans. The upper jaws also played a role in digestion. They contained small, globular teeth with flat, spatula-shaped crowns. These upper teeth were held by ligaments in a special tooth pad. Unlike most reptiles, these teeth did not appear to be replaced. Once the animal strained food with its lower teeth, it probably used the upper teeth to mash the food. Most other members of its group had at most sixteen vertebrae. The body was built for a life involving water. It had a long torso and massive, splayed hindfeet. Recent studies suggest its ankle structure helped it with wading behavior. However, its body shape made flying difficult.
