People first found these fossils in the early 1870s.

A scientist named Othniel Charles Marsh found the first wing bones. He thought the animal had teeth at first. This was because he found a tooth from a prehistoric fish nearby. He thought the tooth belonged to the pterosaur. In 1876, Marsh realized the animal had no teeth at all. He gave it the name Pteranodon to show this. Another scientist named Edward Drinker Cope also found fossils. They even had a dispute over who should name the species first.

Finding the first complete skulls changed everything for scientists.

Samuel Wendell Williston found a skull in Kansas in 1876. These skulls showed the large crests on their heads. This proved they were different from any animals found in Europe. Scientists have spent many years sorting out the different types of Pteranodon. Today, researchers mostly recognize two main species. One is called Pteranodon longiceps. The other is called Pteranodon sternbergi. Some scientists think a third species, Pteranodon maiseyi, might also exist.

It is helpful to think of Pteranodon as a relative of dinosaurs.

Even though they were not dinosaurs, they were closely related. They both belong to a group called Avemetatarsalia. You can also compare their flying to how modern birds move. They used their large wings to soar over the ancient sea.

Most fossils were found in what is now Kansas, Nebraska, and Alabama. These fossils were deposited in the Smoky Hill Chalk. This chalk formed at the bottom of the Western Interior Seaway. This was a large, shallow sea that split North America in half. Pteranodon was a major part of this ancient marine community.

Most other pterosaurs known at the time had teeth. However, Pteranodon lacked them entirely. They also possessed large bony crests on their skulls. These crests varied greatly between males and females. This is an example of sexual dimorphism, where males and females look different. Males were much larger than females. A male Pteranodon longiceps could have a wingspan exceeding 6 meters.

The discovery of these animals involved a famous scientific rivalry. In the early 1870s, Othniel Charles Marsh found the first wing bones.

He initially thought the animal had teeth. He had found a tooth from a fish called Xiphactinus nearby. He mistakenly believed the tooth belonged to the pterosaur. At the same time, Edward Drinker Cope was also finding specimens. Cope named his finds Ornithochirus, which was a misspelling of a European genus. This led to a heated dispute over naming rights. Cope eventually conceded that Marsh had priority in 1875. Marsh later realized the animal was toothless. In 1876, he officially named the genus Pteranodon.

Finding complete skulls changed how scientists understood the animal. In May 1876, Samuel Wendell Williston found the first skull in Kansas.

These skulls revealed the large crests and the lack of teeth. This proved they were very different from European pterosaurs. Scientists have struggled for decades to classify all the different specimens. Marsh originally named many species based on size. Some were named Pteranodon ingens and Pteranodon velox. Later, scientist Eaton suggested these differences were just due to fossilization. He believed pressure from rocks flattened the bones. Eaton argued that size was the only real difference between species.

Classification of Pteranodon remains a complex subject for researchers. Today, only two species are widely recognized. These are Pteranodon longiceps and Pteranodon sternbergi. Some scientists believe a third species, Pteranodon maiseyi, might exist. There is also debate about the genus Geosternbergia. Some researchers suggest P. sternbergi belongs to this separate genus. Another genus, Dawndraco, might also be related to these groups. The scientific community continues to study these bones to find the truth. Every new fossil helps clarify these relationships.

Pteranodon is a very well-studied animal. Scientists have identified about 1,200 different specimens. Many of these are well-preserved with nearly complete skeletons. This group also includes the nyctosaurids. Understanding Pteranodon helps scientists understand the entire history of flying reptiles. It shows how specialized these animals became in their environment.
