Pseudo-Democritus

philosophy religion Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Some old books were once linked to Democritus. He was a Greek thinker from long ago. But scholars now use a new name for these books. They call the writers "pseudo-Democritus." This means the books were not really by him.

Many people think Bolos of Mendes wrote them. He was a doctor and a scientist. These books are some of the oldest works on alchemy. Alchemy is an old way of studying nature. The original books were called the Four Books. They were about dyeing things. One book taught how to make metals look like gold. Another showed how to make them look like silver. They also wrote about making stones. One book was about dyeing wool purple.

We do not have the original Four Books today. We only have parts of them. These parts are found in other old writings. Many later Greek thinkers studied these parts. They even wrote notes to explain them. One famous idea comes from these books. It says nature delights in nature. It also says nature conquers and masters nature. This idea came from a legendary teacher named Ostanes.
