While P. andrewsi typically had a single nose structure, P. hellenikorhinus had a double, paired structure. The name hellenikorhinus refers to its broad, angular snout, which looks like the profiles found in Greek sculptures.

In 1921, the Third Central Asiatic Expedition arrived in Beijing. This team was organized by the American Museum of Natural History. Shackelford found a partial juvenile skull in the reddish sandstones of the Flaming Cliffs.

Paleontologist Walter W. Granger identified the specimen as reptilian. In 1923, Granger and William K. Gregory formally described the species P. andrewsi. They named it in honor of Andrews for his leadership during these expeditions.
