Finally, a parachute system slowed the craft for a water landing. 
Project Mercury had several distinct stages of flight and success. It began with 20 uncrewed developmental flights, some of which used animals. The program eventually moved to six successful flights by human astronauts. These men were known as the "Mercury Seven." On May 5, 1961, Alan Shepard became the first American in space during a suborbital flight. Later, on February 20, 1962, John Glenn achieved the goal of orbital flight. He completed three orbits around the Earth. 
The program's impact on future space travel was massive. It proved that humans could function in space and return safely. This success laid the groundwork for Project Gemini. Gemini carried two astronauts and perfected docking maneuvers. Those maneuvers were essential for the later Apollo program. The Apollo program eventually aimed to land humans on the moon.
