Proconsul (mammal)

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Proconsul was a group of primates from a long time ago. They lived during the Miocene epoch. This was between 21 and 17 million years ago. Scientists found their fossils in Eastern Africa. These bones come from places like Kenya and Uganda.

These animals are very important to science. They might be ancestors to all apes. This includes gibbons and great apes. It may even include humans.

Proconsul had a mix of different features. It had some traits like Old World monkeys. For example, it had a long and flexible back. It used a posture called pronograde. This means it moved on top of branches. It was an arboreal quadruped. This means it walked on four limbs in trees.

However, it also had ape-like features. The most important one was having no tail. It also had a stabilized elbow joint. This helped it grab things well. It could not hang from branches easily like modern apes.

Finding these fossils was a big deal. A gold prospector found a jaw in 1909. This happened at Koru near Kisumu in Kenya. It was the first fossil mammal found in sub-Saharan Africa.

Later, Arthur Hopwood found more fossils. He was on an expedition with Louis Leakey. They found three individuals near Lake Victoria in 1931. Hopwood gave the group its name in 1933. He named it Proconsul. This name means "before Consul."

There are four known species of Proconsul. They are P. africanus, P. gitongai, P. major, and P. meswae. These species mostly differ in body size.

Scientists have changed how they group these fossils. For example, Mary Leakey found a fossil in 1948. It was first called P. africanus. Later, Alan Walker reclassified it in 1993. He grouped it with finds from 1951. This made a new species called P. heseloni. Some species like P. nyanzae were moved to a new genus called Ekembo.

We can learn about their homes from the ground. The fossils were found in warm places. One site had a mean annual temperature above 25°C. It also had a lot of rain. The rain was about 2,000 mm each year.

These animals lived in tropical seasonal forests. Some areas might have been open grasslands. These environments changed over time. Some places even had volcanic disturbances. This tells us how the world worked back then.
