Prince Edward Island is an island province located in Canada.

It sits within the Gulf of St. Lawrence. The island is positioned west of Cape Breton Island. It lies north of the Nova Scotia peninsula. It is also northeast of New Brunswick. The southern shore is bounded by the Northumberland Strait. This province is unique because it is the only Canadian province made entirely of islands.

While it is the smallest province by land area and population, it has the highest population density in Canada. Its capital and largest city is Charlottetown.

The island's geology began 250 to 300 million years ago. During this time, ancient mountains sent silt, sand, and gravel into the Gulf of St. Lawrence. These sediments built up to form a sedimentary basin. This material makes up the island's bedrock today. Much later, Pleistocene glaciers moved across the land. When these glaciers receded about 15,000 years ago, they left behind glacial debris called till. At that time, a strip of land connected the island to the mainland. As glaciers melted, ocean levels rose and flooded that strip. This process created the island we see today. The land eventually rose up as it rebounded from the weight of the ice.

The climate of the province is described as maritime. This means the surrounding Gulf of St. Lawrence strongly influences the weather. The warmer waters of the Gulf often make the island milder than parts of New Brunswick or Nova Scotia. However, the weather is very changeable. Specific conditions rarely last for a long time. Because the Gulf of St. Lawrence can freeze over, the climate is also considered a humid continental climate.

This freezing changes how the weather behaves. In winter, the island faces many storms and blizzards. These often come from the North Atlantic or the Gulf of Mexico. In July and August, the average daytime high is 23°C. In January and February, the average daytime high is -3°C.

History on the island began with the Mi'kmaq people. They called their homeland Mi'kma'ki. The island was part of the district Epekwitk aq Piktuk. In the Mi'kmaw language, Epekwitk means "land cradled on the waves."

French colonists arrived in 1604 and established a colony called Acadia. They named the island Isle St-Jean. The British took control of the island in 1763 after the Seven Years' War. It was part of Nova Scotia until 1769. In 1798, the name was changed to Prince Edward Island. It was named after Prince Edward, Duke of Kent. He was the father of the future Queen Victoria.

The island played a major role in the creation of Canada. In 1864, the Charlottetown Conference was held on the island.

Leaders met there to discuss a union of the Maritime provinces. This meeting started a series of discussions that led to Canadian Confederation in 1867. Prince Edward Island did not join the union immediately. The province faced bankruptcy due to the Land Question and railroad construction. Eventually, the island joined as Canada's seventh province on July 1, 1873.

Today, the economy relies on several different industries. Farming is a central part of life on the island. The province produces 25% of all potatoes in Canada.

This industry is very large and accounts for $1 billion every year. Other important sectors include fisheries, tourism, aerospace, and biotechnology. The province also works in information technology and renewable energy.

The population of 182,508 residents in 2025 reflects many early settlers. Common surnames often have Acadian, Scottish, Irish, or English origins.

Nature on the island includes many different species. Some animals, like red foxes and coyotes, are common. However, larger animals like moose, bears, and wolves are no longer found there. This change happened due to hunting and habitat disruption. Some species are currently at risk, such as the piping plover and the American eel. In the waters nearby, North Atlantic right whales have been seen more frequently. In 2015, researchers recorded 35 to 40 whales in the area.

The island also relies heavily on its natural resources for water. The province depends entirely on groundwater from wells for drinking water. The Winter River watershed provides about 92 per cent of the water for Charlottetown.
