During the nineteenth century, the city grew through specific industries. It was a known center for shipbuilding and the lumber industry. It also served as an important fishing port. In 1874, the Prince Edward Island Railway opened. This line ran between Charlottetown and Summerside. The railway helped drive industrial development along the waterfront. The city also established important services like the Charlottetown Hospital in 1879. These developments helped the local economy expand.

In the modern era, the city has expanded significantly. Many people now live in outlying areas like Sherwood and West Royalty. The city grew when the village of Spring Park was amalgamated in 1959. Later, in 1995, several other communities joined the city.
