Priapulids are a group of marine worms.

Most of these worms live in ocean mud. Some live in very deep water. Others live in shallow, warm water. They can be found as deep as 8,000 meters!

These worms have a special body part. It is a tube that can reach out. We call this an introvert. The introvert has many small spines. It also has teeth inside. The worms use these teeth to grab prey. They mostly eat other slow-moving worms. Some smaller types eat tiny bits of waste instead.

Priapulids are very old animals. Fossils show they lived in the Middle Cambrian period. This was a very long time ago. They are related to arthropods, like crabs and insects.

Some people call them "living fossils." This is because they have stayed much the same for a long time. They have a tough outer skin called a cuticle. They must moult, or shed this skin, to grow bigger.
