Pragmatism is a way of thinking. It began in the United States in the 1870s.

Many thinkers helped shape this idea. Charles Sanders Peirce was one of the first. William James and John Dewey were also key members.

They were part of a group called The Metaphysical Club.

Pragmatists do not think ideas just mirror the world. Instead, they see ideas as tools. These tools help people solve problems. They also help people predict what might happen next. One main idea is to look at results. Peirce had a rule for this. He said to look at the practical effects of an idea. If you know the effects, you know the idea.

This way of thinking links to science. It looks at how well a theory works. A good theory should explain things well. It should also help us predict new things.

Later, new thinkers like Hilary Putnam kept these ideas alive. They studied how we know what is true. They looked at how our beliefs work together. This makes philosophy a way to help us act in the real world.
