Powerlifting

sports Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Powerlifting is a sport for building and showing strength.

Athletes try to lift the heaviest weight possible. They make three big attempts for three different lifts. First, they perform a squat. Next, they do a bench press. Finally, they try a deadlift. This sport grew from older events called "odd lifts."

In the past, these contests used many different types of lifts. Over time, the sport became standard. Now, most people focus on those three main lifts.

Lifters can compete in two ways. Some use special gear to help them. This is called equipped lifting. They might wear a bench shirt or a squat suit. These clothes help store power to lift more. Other lifters go "raw" or unequipped. They use less gear. Most federations allow a weightlifting belt in raw lifting.

People lift all over the world. It is even part of the Paralympic Games. Men with spinal cord injuries have competed since 1984. Women joined the Paralympic Games in 2000. It is a global way to test how much weight a person can move.
