Potential theory

math Maturity 9-11 Next article →

Math can help us model the forces of nature. In the 1800s, scientists saw something special. They saw that gravity and electric forces work in similar ways. They used math to describe these forces. This math is called potential theory.

Potential theory studies special patterns called harmonic functions. These functions follow certain rules. One rule is called the maximum principle. It helps us understand how these functions act. Another rule is Liouville's theorem. It says that some functions must stay the same everywhere.

These patterns also connect to chance. We can use them to study probability. This is the math of how likely things are to happen. In two dimensions, these patterns are very close to complex analysis. Complex analysis is a way to study math with two parts. In three or more dimensions, the rules change. Potential theory helps us see how these rules work in any space. It is a powerful tool for understanding our world.
