Position operator

physical science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Tiny particles can move in many ways. Scientists use math to find where they are. They use a tool called a position operator. This tool helps find a particle's spot.

In science, a particle has a state. We describe this state with a wave function. This is a math rule that shows the particle. It can show a particle on a line. It can also show a particle in a big space. The wave function tells us the chance of finding a particle. This chance is called probability density. If we look in a certain range, we can find the chance of the particle being there.

Sometimes, we know the spot for sure. This is an ideal state. We use a special math tool called a Dirac delta to show it. In this state, the position is known exactly. But there is a rule in nature. If we know the spot perfectly, we know nothing about its speed. This is called the uncertainty principle. This rule shows how the tiny world works. It is a very important part of science.
