Port Louis is the capital and most populous city of Mauritius.

It serves as the nation's primary political and financial center. Most of the city sits within the Port Louis District. A small western portion extends into the Black River District. The city is managed by the Municipal City Council of Port Louis. According to the 2018 census, the population was 147,066 people. This city is a vital hub for the entire island nation.

The city's location was chosen for its natural protection. The Moka Mountain Range sits near the city. This range shields Port Louis from the strong winds of cyclones. Because of this safety, the city became a site for a major harbor and fort. The port is the only official entry and exit point for sea vessels in Mauritius. All ships must be cleared here before they visit other parts of the country.

History shows how different groups shaped the city. Dutch settlers used the area as a harbor starting in 1606. They called the area the Harbour of Tortoises. In 1736, the French government made it the administrative center of Mauritius. They named the port after King Louis XV. During this time, the island was known as Ile de France. The French governor, Bertrand-François Mahé de La Bourdonnais, helped develop the city. Later, the British occupied the island during the Napoleonic Wars from 1800 to 1815. This occupation helped Britain control the Indian Ocean.

The port is a massive operation divided into three distinct terminals. Terminal I provides berthing for cargo, passengers, and fishing boats. Terminal II handles specialized goods like sugar, fish, and tallow. It includes a Bulk Sugar Terminal that can store 175,000 tons of cargo. This terminal can load sugar at a rate of 1,450 tons per hour.

Terminal II also features a dedicated cruise ship jetty. Terminal III is specialized for large container ships. It uses super-post-Panamax and post-Panamax gantry cranes to move containers. In 2019, the port's cargo container capacity was 1 million TEUs.

Economics in Port Louis are driven by several major sectors. The financial industry is a huge part of the local economy. The city is home to the Stock Exchange of Mauritius. It also hosts over ten commercial banks. The oldest of these is the Mauritius Commercial Bank, founded in 1838. The Bank of Mauritius serves as the country's central bank. This is due to its position in the rain shadow of the southeast trade winds. The city has a distinct wet season from December through April. These months see the highest average rainfall. The rest of the year is the dry season. Temperatures are generally highest during the height of the wet season. The city experiences a relatively small range in average temperatures throughout the year.

Modern transportation is changing how people move through the city. Many streets follow a rectangular grid and are often one-way. Because of many workers, daytime traffic can be very heavy. To solve this, the government built the Mauritius Metro Express. This is a light rail transit system. Construction began in 2017 with help from partners in Singapore, South Africa, and Australia. The first stage opened in January 2020, connecting Port Louis to Rose Hill Central. The second stage to Curepipe opened in October 2022.
