This library contained thousands of books covering science and Greek philosophy. Through these texts, Gerbert became deeply interested in the natural sciences practiced in the Islamic madrasahs.

One of Gerbert's most significant contributions was the reintroduction of the abacus and new numbering systems. He learned about Hindu-Arabic digits and applied this knowledge to a new type of abacus.

This specific abacus was crafted from animal horn by a shieldmaker of Rheims. It featured 27 parts with nine number symbols, though it did not use a symbol for zero. His pupil, Richer, noted that Gerbert could perform complex calculations much faster than others using traditional Roman numerals. A student named Bernelinus of Paris later wrote the *Liber Abaci* to explain the design and the Hindu-Arabic symbols used on the device.

Gerbert also revolutionized how people studied the heavens by reintroducing the armillary sphere.

His career moved from the classroom to the highest levels of political and religious power. After serving as a teacher to the young Emperor Otto II, he became the abbot of the monastery of Bobbio in 981. He also held positions in Rheims, where he was involved in complex political shifts involving King Hugh Capet and Emperor Otto III. In 998, Pope Gregory V appointed him the archbishop of Ravenna. Finally, with imperial support, he was elected Pope in 999. He chose the name Sylvester II, referencing an advisor to Emperor Constantine I. As the first French pope, he used his authority to fight against simony and ensure church leaders lived lives of high character.

Gerbert's legacy is defined by his mastery of the *quadrivium*, which includes arithmetic, geometry, astronomy, and music. He even constructed a hydraulic-powered organ with brass pipes in Rheims that was considered superior to other instruments of the time.

Some historians even suggest he may have been involved in the invention of an early mechanical clock around 996.
